This week’s slate of new anime features films from two of our fave directors, with Anime Limited releasing Masaaki Yuasa movie Lu Over The Wall alongside a double bill of early Makoto Shinkai works, The Place Promised In Our Early Days and Voices Of A Distant Star.

Available as a Blu-ray and DVD collector’s edition combi complete with 52-page booklet, as well as on standard Blu-ray and DVD, last year’s Lu Over The Wall is the latest film from Masaaki Yuasa, the director of Mind Game, The Tatami Galaxy and Night is Short, Walk on Girl. You can check out our review for full details, but this light-hearted fantasy tale about a schoolboy who encounters a music-loving mermaid certainly floats our boat.

We’re also stoked to see two of Makoto Shinkai’s early films – 2004 feature The Place Promised In Our Early Days and poignant 2002 short Voices Of A Distant Star – packaged together on Blu-ray and DVD. Best known these days for top-selling 2016 blockbuster Your Name, the über-talented Shinkai first caught the public eye with these two bittersweet sci-fi films. Also out on Anime Limited’s All The Anime label is the standard Blu-ray edition of Sword Art Online II: Part 3, containing episodes 15-19 of A-1 Pictures’ fantasy series.

Manga Entertainment is also in a movie-releasing mood this week, debuting both Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions! The Movie: Rikka Version and Digimon Adventure Tri – The Movie Part 5: Coexistence.

Out on Blu-ray and DVD, Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions! The Movie: Rikka Version revisits Kyoto Animation’s 2012 series about high schooler Yūta Togashi’s relationship with cute, eye patch-wearing classmate Rikka Takanashi, who’s still living in a world of make-believe and fantasy that Yūta (allegedly) left behind when he finished junior school. Directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, who also helmed the TV anime, Rikka Version tells their story from the delusional Rikka’s point of view.

Released as a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray as well as on standard DVD, Digimon Adventure Tri – The Movie Part 5: Coexistence is the penultimate instalment of Toei Animation’s Digimon Adventure tri. film series – a direct sequel to the first two TV series, Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, made to celebrate the franchise’s 15th anniversary.
