Timesplitters and Second Sight acquired by THQ Nordic

The rights to classic comedic first-person shooter trilogy Timesplitters and sci-fi action adventure game Second Sight have both been acquired by video game publisher THQ Nordic.

A quick history lesson: the first Timesplitters game was developed back in 2000 by British-based Free Radical Design, many of whom had previously worked for Rare on iconic shooters Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Two sequels followed in 2002 and 2005, both receiving favourable reviews, but poor sales of the third entry and a middling performance for the developer’s next shooter, Haze, meant the studio fell into administration.

Nevertheless, the cult status of the series has remained strong over the years, with many still hoping the series may see a return some day – especially as work had supposedly started on Timesplitters 4 back in 2007. When Crytek stepped in to purchase the company in 2009, rumours resurfaced again about a new entry, but they would later confirm that Timesplitters 4 was not in development.

Today, however, with the rights newly acquired by THQ Nordic, it seems there are plans to bring back the series.

“We are hugely excited to have acquired Timesplitters,” said Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of THQ Nordic’s Koch Media, in an official statement. “The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience. We have many fans of the Timesplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill today’s gaming audience.”

Meanwhile, the rights to another game developed by Free Radical, Second Sight, were also picked up in the deal with the intention to release products in that franchise too.

This is great! I’ve been waiting for a revival of this awesome game. I hope that THQ Nordic gets the recipe that made this games so great back in the 2000s.
