Er…wow

After two seasons of occupation by the Reich, the resistance is ready to ramp up the fight for a free world…but now it’s no longer just one world they’re fighting for, it’s the fate of a whole multiverse’s worth of them.

Based on the novel by Philip K. Dick, about a world in which the Axis powers won World War II. Within the novel, “The Grasshopper Lies Heavy” is a banned novel (a novel within the novel) by the man in the high castle, which tells of *another* alternate world in which the Allies won WWII, but *not* the same way as in our world. In the TV series, “The Grasshopper Lies Heavy” is the name given to a series of newsreel films.

Unlike other contemporary TV shows that have adopted a similar approach to raising more questions instead of offering answers – most notably Westworld and Lost – the performances in The Man in the High Castle have truly made us care about what happens to the characters, even if we never really have a clue as to what the blazes is actually going on. Something that Westworld utterly failed to do because the entire first seasons was basically about a rich eccentric with expensive toys in an expensive park run by wealthy people for other wealthy people. Consequently, it’s really hard to actually care about what happens to anyone.

Alexa Davalos returns as the incredibly scatty Juliana Crain and she’s joined once again by the frankly magnificent Rufus Sewell as Obergruppenführer John Smith. Luke Kleintank also returns as the treacherous Joe Blake as does Rupert Evans as the ill-fated Frank Frink.

Despite Juliana Crain being infuriatingly…irresponsible and erratic at times, the fact that she infuriates, is because of a good perfomance. And Obergruppenführer John Smith, well…he just carries the show.

The Man in the High Castle returns to Amazon Video this Autumn, but there’s even more good news if you need a refresh of just what the show got up to in its prior seasons, Amazon has very kindly and very cleverly also dropped a huge, 30-minute-long recap of seasons 1 and 2 to watch while you wait.

You can watch that here.

Plus Amazon has confirmed that season 4 was in pre-production.

The Man in the High Castle’s third season debuts October 5, a date that producer Isa Hackett and daughter of author Philip K. Dick said was significant, but didn’t say why at the SDCC panel. Given the political themes of resistance in the show, it might be a reference to the upcoming 2018 US midterm elections.

Hackett also said the third season will include new aspects that actually come from a sequel novel to “The Man in the High Castle,” one that Dick did not finish writing before he died in 1982.
