The Lord of the Rings: Living Card Game from Asmodee Digital and Fantasy Flight Interactive is now live on Steam’s Early Access. Based on Fantasy Flight’s own long-running co-operative card game, the new title sees players take a trio of heroes on adventures through Tolkien’s Middle-earth, pitting their 30 card deck against Sauron’s minions.

At present, the game comes with a tutorial plus the first stage of initial campaign The Shadow’s Reach, which sees Aragorn, Arwen, Gimli and chums off to rescue Bilbo from the clutches of Mirkwood’s giant spiders. The other four stages of the story can be purchased for either real or in-game currency in the store, along with four more heroes to add to the quartet that players start with and an assortment of allies, equipment and event cards.

Available at three purchase tiers – $7.99, $15.99 and $29.99 – and as a $47.99 bundle of all three starter packs, The Lord of the Rings: Living Card Game is currently a single-player only experience, although a co-operative multiplayer mode is due to be implemented at some point during Early Access. The digital version also comes as part of the recently-released Limited Collector’s Edition of the tabletop game.
