Retro publisher Dotemu and developers Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games have revealed the latest instalment in Sega’s iconic side-scrolling beat-em-up series, Streets of Rage 4, releasing a teaser video.

The Streets of Rage franchise began on the Sega Mega Drive, with the first game released back in 1991. It featured the characters Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding and Adam Hunter as former police officers taking on the crime syndicate led by Mr X. Two sequels were also released on the Mega Drive.

The fourth instalment sees the return of Axel and Blaze fighting through various stages to take on another serious crime problem. Featuring hand-drawn visuals from Lizardcube (the team behind 2017’s Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake), the new sequel builds upon the classic trilogy and is said to feature new gameplay mechanics.

Apart from the announcement, there is currently no release date, nor which formats the game will appear on (though for a 2D beat-em-up, it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch to see this released on all consoles and PC). However, Lizardcube do want you to know that “important debates are taking place” on Axel’s beard.
