CBS All Access has cast Ethan Peck as Mr Spock in Star Trek: Discovery after an extensive search. Peck’s credits include parts in In Time, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and 10 Things I Hate About You — and he even looks right for the part.

“Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek,” says showrunner Alex Kurtzman.

“The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion. We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion, and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack, and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family.”

Meanwhile Peck posted this on his Instagram account:

You may remember back in April, Jonathan Frakes, who was speaking at El Paso Comic Con, said the legendary Spock would make an appearance in the second episode of the upcoming season, which is the one Frakes is thought to be directing.

It’s believed that the decision to cast Peck had been made a some time ago, but that the producers of Discovery were sitting on the news for a little bit.

Kurtzman spoke to TV Guide recently and teased that Discovery season 2 will feature a version of Spock who’s yet to mature into the character we know from Nimoy’s portrayal. For those worried that the show will change the him beyond recognition, Kurtzman was keen to stress that they’ve paid close attention to the canon.

“This is not entirely the Spock who has been formed enough to be the Spock that we know from TOS. There’s a lot of story about who Spock was before he becomes the Spock that is the yin-yang to Kirk. What I’m so excited about is that we have an opportunity to present a version of Spock that’s both totally consistent with the Spock everyone knows but very, very different. And it’s all gonna tie to how we sync up with canon.”

We saw Spock’s quarters in some set pics back in April and again in the first season two trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con.

The first season of Star Trek: Discovery is available to stream in its entirety on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix in the UK. Season one is available to pre-order on Blu-ray and DVD and will be available on November 13th. Season two is now filming in Toronto and will premiere in January 2019.
