The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield, all of these have one thing in common – they are found footage horror movies. Now it’s South Korea’s turn to tackle the subject, and their answer is Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. Centred around the eponymous psychiatric hospital which is known as one of the most haunted places in the country, it stands to reason that it would work perfectly as the setting for a horror movie.

Armed with GoPro cameras and drones, Ha-Joon and his fearless friends decide to search the building and livestream their experience to their ghost-hunting YouTube channel. Hoping to reach one million viewers during the stream, the three pals recruit four others to join them before they embark on their journey through the abandoned asylum. Whilst in there, they open the ominous looking Room 402, where they soon learn the truth behind the myths as they try desperately to survive.

Directed by Jung Bum-sik, the horror promises to be an unnerving experience thanks to its chilling narrative and POV-style scenes. Horror and Asian film fans alike will have the chance to see the film in the UK first thanks to the London Korean Film Festival, as they present Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum as part of their teaser screenings leading up to the official festival later this year. The smash-hit horror film will be screened at Picturehouse Central in London, on Thursday August 30 at 9pm. Tickets are £8, and can be bought here.
