Crunchyroll owner Ellation is to launch a new division dedicated to the creation of original anime-style series under the ‘Crunchyroll Originals’  banner, beginning with animated fantasy adventure High Guardian Spice in 2019.

With production facilities in Burbank, California and Tokyo, the new division – Ellation Studios – will be headed up by Margaret Dean, former GM of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (Robot Chicken, Buddy Thunderstruck ) and current president of Women in Animation.

Slated to premiere on Crunchyroll next year, the studio’s first offering High Guardian Spice will follow a quartet of girls – Rosemary, Sage, Thyme and Parsley – as they master battle and sorcery at High Guardian Academy in order to protect the world from an ominous unknown threat.

Created by Raye Rodriguez, High Guardian Spice’s staff will include Animaniacs helmer Audu Paden as supervising director and Amalia Levari as story editor. The show will also feature an all-female writers room – an announcement that, together with the non-anime nature of the project – has sparked a backlash from a section of Crunchyroll’s audience.

“With Crunchyroll Originals, we’re looking to showcase animation as an art form, delivering meaningful original content that draws from our strengths as a truly international service dedicated to super-serving anime fans,” said Margaret Dean, head of the new Ellation Studios.

“The art style of High Guardian Spice combines anime influence with an untold story and unique perspective. Raye’s team has been inspiring to work with, and we can’t wait for fans to see what we have in store for them.”
