The opening day of Washington DC’s NOVA Open wargames convention saw Games Workshop unveil Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress, a new game that brings the dungeon-crawling gameplay of Warhammer Quest to the 40K universe.

While details are currently scarce, the UK miniatures manufacturer says that Blackstone Fortress will transplant the co-operative narrative experience of fantasy title Warhammer Quest Silver Tower and sequel Shadows Over Hammerhal to its iconic Warhammer 40,000 sci-fi setting, supported by ‘a host of stunning new miniatures that bring all manner of champions and villains from the lore to life as never before’.

The titular Blackstone Fortress that players will be exploring already exists in 40K lore – one of a handful of mysterious xenos-built space forts/super weapons that have been used by both the Imperium and the forces of Chaos, and that are especially associated with Abaddon the Despoiler, Warmaster of Chaos and commander of the Black Legion.

Warhammer Quest’s move from fantasy to 40K will give veteran gamers a distinct sense of déjà vu, as the same thing happened with the adventure game series’ venerable forerunners HeroQuest and Advanced HeroQuest, which inspired 1990’s space hulk-set Space Crusade and Tyranid bio ship-set Advanced Space Crusade respectively.

Other GW announcements at NOVA include a closer look at the upcoming Speed Freeks, the Ork racing game due to hit shelves in October; the first glimpse of a new Ork vehicle kit, a Warboss on a Deffkilla Wartrike; a sneak peek at Nightvault, the box set for the second season of board game Warhammer Underworlds; and the news that this year’s Chapter Approved supplement will feature a beta codex for the Adepta Sororitas ahead of the Sisters of Battle’s long-awaited plastic debut in 2019.
