Kotaro Uchikoshi, the creator of the absolutely barmy but frequently brilliant Zero Escape series, has revealed his latest game, AI: The Somnium Files. Check out the debut trailer below.

Described as a “detective noir mystery”, AI: The Somnium Files follows the story of the detective Kaname Date, though we have absolutely no idea what exactly he’s investigating at the minute.

We can, however, try to look for some clues in the trippy debut trailer, which shows Date standing by a merry-go-round in the daytime before it morphs into some horrible nightmare scenario. After the cut, the sky turns red and the horses from the ride can be seen skewered on poles in the surrounding gardens. There’s also a ghostly young woman who stands up in front of the ride before the image distorts and the game’s logo appears.

There are also a handful of twisted words and sentences that fly by throughout the trailer. One appears to read ‘abandoned child’ while another is the ‘Brain Investigation Squad’. Many of the other words are a little unclear.

The trailer ends by flashing up Mark 9:47. This passage from the Bible reads: “And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell.

Right then, good luck unpacking all that.

Any other hints come from the announcement post on the official PlayStation Blog. “Combined with the mystery and complicated, mind-blowing plot that I know Uchikoshi will deliver, everything about AI: The Somnium Files is just so cool,” it reads.

AI: The Somnium Files will be available on PS4 at some point in the future.
