Later this year, Telltale will conclude its long-running and immensely successful video game adaptation of The Walking Dead with one final four-episode season featuring Clementine and AJ. Last weekend, the developer gave us a look at the beginning of the end by releasing the first 15 minutes of episode one.

What becomes immediately clear, especially for anyone who has been playing the series so far, is the bump in visual quality. It’s certainly similar to what we’ve seen in previous instalments, but there’s a new crispness and clarity – something we definitely appreciate.

There also appears to be a small expansion on the game’s exploration mechanics. Where before you wandered around areas and interacted with hotspots with a simple button press, now Clementine can choose items to carry with her, which, as we see in the footage, opens up other potential pathways such as using a crowbar to break a door open.

Combat looks slightly reworked too. Instead of sticking to rigid button inputs you now have different options when dealing with zombie attacks. It’s nothing massively advanced but should give a bit more variety to encounters.

As for everything else, it’s that familiar choose-you-own-adventure formula, with dialogue choices to make and actions to take that could lead to disastrous consequences. Also, we still absolutely adore Clementine and can’t wait to see the conclusion to her story.

The Walking Dead – The Final Season will debut on August 14 for PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. You can pre-order the entire season to get episode one on release and all subsequent episodes as they become available.
