The official website for High Score Girl has been updated with the latest (and likely final) trailer for the anime series, which was uploaded on Warner Bros Anime’s YouTube channel.

Adapted from Rensuke Oshikiri’s ongoing manga, the romantic comedy is set in 1991 around the arcade scene, as Haruo Yaguchi spends his days playing games. He doesn’t excel at much of anything else, but he’s near unbeatable when playing as Guile on Street Fighter II. One day he ends up playing against his classmate Akira Oono, who is quiet, multi-talented, has good grades and comes from a strict family. Akira beats him, which results in Haruo wanting to end her winning streak. It also forms the beginning of an unlikely relationship.

If you happen to recall the gaming scene in the 1990s then you’ll find this trailer to be a nostalgia trip as the characters are seen playing Street Fighter II and also on a PC Engine. The series is produced by animation studio J.C. Staff and has been a long time coming, with the production having to gain approval from the likes of Capcom, Konami, Bandai Namco SNK, Sega and Taito to feature their games.

The series features Kohei Amasaki voicing Haruo Yaguchi, Sayumi Suzushiro voicing Akira Oono and Yuki Hirose voicing Haruo’s friend Koharu Hidaka.

Directed by Yoshiki Yamakawa (director of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) and written by Tatsuhiko Urahata (writer of Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers), High Score Girl will be broadcast in Japan on Tokyo MX, MBS and BS11 from 13 July 2018.
