Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker makes surprise appearance at Her Universe fashion show

Fashion company Her Universe was at San Deigo Comic Con with a fashion show to promote their officially licensed clothing from brands such as Marvel, Star Wars and Doctor Who.

The show was hosted by Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein, during which she introduced one ‘model’ wearing the brand’s Doctor Who outfit based on that worn by the Thirteenth Doctor. As the model walked the catwalk and lowered her hood and it turned out to be the Thirteenth Doctor herself, Jodie Whittaker (with sonic screwdriver in hand), the audience went nuts.

A video of Jodie strutting her stuff on the catwalk was uploaded on YouTube by Derek McCaw and can be viewed below.

Revealing that she helped design her costume for the show, Jodie was asked what she could say about the Thirteenth Doctor’s style. “The overriding sense of style had to be comfort,” she said. “I wanted to express the colours of the sky. So we have the sky and we have space,” as she motioned towards the grey-blue colours of her coat. “As I got rudely thrown out of the TARDIS at the end of the Christmas special, I wanted to represent the sky I fell through and potentially the dawn of the new one, which is me and the Thirteenth one.”

Before she left, she told the crowd, “Do you know what? Any age, any gender, anyone can wear it. You’re not dressing as a girl and you’re not dressing as a boy. You’re dressing as the Doctor.”

If you want to dress as the Thirteenth Doctor, the outfit itself is currently only available at Her Universe’s booth at SDCC, but will likely appear on their website under their Doctor Who collection very soon.

Earlier in the day, Jodie had taken part in a panel, describing the Thirteenth Doctor as “a pillar of hope, striving for brightness and inclusion.” She also talked about her three companions, saying, “It’s an ensemble piece and that is really apparent when you’re on set, when you’re in the scenes and everyone’s dynamic brings something new to the table.” The latest trailer for the new series was also unveiled, where we see her “new best friends”, Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh).

Doctor Who returns to BBC One in October 2018.
