David Leitch in talks to direct Enter the Dragon remake

Stuntman turned director, David Leitch has had success with John Wick, Atomic Blonde and more recently Deadpool 2. It has been reported by Deadline that Leitch is in talks with Warner Bros to direct a remake of Enter the Dragon.

The film celebrates its 45th anniversary this August and starred Bruce Lee as a martial artist chosen to enter a tournament on an island owned by the crime lord Han, who is suspected of using the contest as a way to smuggle drugs. However, Lee has personal motivations for entering; to avenge the death of his sister.

The original film was directed by Robert Clouse and was billed as the first Ameican produced martial arts film. It was also a vehicle to promote Lee to western audiences. However, one would argue that doing a remake with no Bruce Lee, all you’re getting is just another slate of similarly themed tournament films, like Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Kickboxer, Bloodsport and The Quest, or the Keanu Reeves directed Man of Tai Chi, or Mortal Kombat (itself inspired by Enter the Dragon).

According to Deadline, Warner is still looking for a writer. Previously Spike Lee and Brett Ratner had been attached to direct.

As controversial as this is…walking over sacred ground…we can’t help but get a little excited. In fact, where’s that DVD copy…it’s time for a re-watch. “O’Hara!”
