Airing Fridays in the US on ABC
Director:
Jesse Bochco
Writer: Iden Baghdadchi

Essential Plot Points:

  • General Hale has Coulson and wants to convince him to work together. She takes him to the leader of the Confederacy, an alien alliance which claims it will protect Earth.
  • Hale and Coulson discuss a counter plan in case the Confederacy tries to take over the Earth. Hale explains Hydra’s original plan to create the strongest human ever, using a program known as “the destroyer of worlds”. She doesn’t believe Coulson’s claims of seeing the catastrophic result of this in the future.
  • General Talbot is still alive, and has apparently been broken by Ruby, Hale’s daughter.

Review:

“Thought we’d seen the last of Hydra.” Hydra: harder to kill than a scorching case of herpes. If you thought this series would peter out when it left space, we’re more than happy to report that’s not the case. Rather, this marks Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. out as a bold show, happy to take big strides more akin to the movies than the street-level heroes.

The introduction of the Confederacy also shows that space travel hasn’t quite left S.H.I.E.L.D.’s mission brief yet, despite them making their way home. And while we’re never keen to see the staple comic-book trend of dead villains being resurrected to fight old foes, the knowledge that Hydra is still alive only strengthens the need for S.H.I.E.L.D. to exist and carry on the good fight.

There’s also a big change in our fave shippers this episode: from cursed to invincible. That’s a strong move, given Fitz and Gemma’s past. The major problem with that shift is it’s only true if nothing changes, and the team is currently doing everything it can to make sure the future they saw does not come to pass. So if Fitz’s belief that the universe’s timeline can’t be messed with is true, they are Teflon and the world will always split apart. If they’re wrong, and there is no shattered world and a grandson called Deke in their future, then it’s probably not wise to assume nothing can kill you. Not in a place where Hydra still holds albeit the tiniest foothold.

The Good:

  • The repetition of people being inducted at General Hale’s base is incredibly effective. We’ve had it with the younger von Strucker, General Talbot and now Coulson. Coulson reacts the best, in that he rejects it and simply heads back to his room. Smart move.
  • General Talbot’s name has been mentioned multiple times in recent weeks, and we’re happy to see him back.

The Bad:

  • There’s a distinct lack of Deke this week, aside from the mentions of his place as Fitz and Simmons’ grandchild.

Best Quotes:

Daisy: “Hale is Hydra? Hale Hydra. Seriously?”
