Production has begun on Quentin Tarantino’s next film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Leonardo DiCaprio has shared a first-look image of himself and co-star Brad Pitt in costume.

The movie tells the story of a former star of a Western TV series (DiCaprio) struggling to make it in Hollywood alongside his longtime stunt double (Pitt) during the Charles Manson murders in 1969 Los Angeles.

Their paths get further complicated by the fact that DiCaprio’s character lives next door to Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie.

On January 20, 1968, Tate married Roman Polanski, her director and co-star in 1967’s The Fearless Vampire Killers. On August 9, 1969, Tate and four others were murdered by members of the Manson Family in the home she shared with Polanski. At the time of her death, she was eight-and-a-half months pregnant with the couple’s son.

This script has been described as Pulp Fiction-esque in tone, and indeed Tarantino has assembled a sprawling ensemble for his ninth and potentially penultimate film ever. The writer/director has long said he plans on retiring from filmmaking after 10 films, so Once Upon a Time in Hollywood could be the beginning of the end.

Unless he makes that Star Trek movie of course.

The incredible cast also includes Timothy Olyphant in a major role, with Al Pacino, Burt Reynolds, Damian Lewis, Luke Perry, Dakota Fanning, Clifton Collins, Keith Jefferson, Emile Hirsch, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Scoot McNairy, and Nicholas Hammond filling out the cast thus far.

This film will be released on August 9th 2019, which is the 50th anniversary of the murder of Tate and friends by members of Manson’s ‘family’. August 9th 1969 is also recognised as the point the Hippie movement and free love era, and the 60s as a whole, came to an abrupt end as a result of these murders.
