Following his cameo in Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy, Howard the Duck has seen a resurgence in popularity. He returned to Marvel Comics with an ongoing series (and even crossed with Deadpool), he has appeared in Marvel’s animated Ultimate Spider-Man series, is a playable character in the Lego Marvel Super Heroes video games and made another appearance in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. Now there’s a chance he might be getting a new movie, at least, that’s what Lea Thompson wants to pitch to Marvel Studios.

In an interview with Inquisitr to talk about her directorial debut of her feature film, The Year of Spectacular Men, the Back to the Future star also talked about her role in the 1986 film, Howard the Duck, where she portrayed Beverly Switzler. However, in the film adaptation, Beverly was a singer for the band Cherry Bomb (where Thompson did her own singing) and allowed Howard to stay with her. Critically maligned at the time, with some critics calling it one of the worst films ever made, the film was a box office flop, yet has since garnered a cult following.

“I wish that he had his due because I don’t think they had the technology to do Howard the Duck well,” said Thompson of the film. “I hope that Marvel does do another Howard the Duck, and does him proud.” She also added that she loved Howard, saying, “I love the duck. I loved the duck in the movie; maybe I took my part too far and now I still love the duck.”

When asked if she might make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thompson then said, “To tell you the actual truth, I am going to Marvel to pitch Howard the Duck, a new movie…In like three weeks. I want to direct the Howard the Duck remake. Why not dream big, right?”

Following the reveal of his cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy, director James Gunn told Empire Magazine at the time, “It’s possible Howard could reappear as more of a character in the Marvel Universe. But if people think that’s going to lead to a Howard The Duck movie, that’s probably not going to happen in the next four years. Who knows after that?”

Well, those four years are nearly up.

Even if she does not direct a Howard the Duck film, having Thompson direct a future Marvel movie may be a possibility. Especially with Marvel Studios Kevin Feige expressing his intention for future Marvel films to be directed by female directors, saying, “I cannot promise that all 20 Marvel movies will have female directors but a heck of a lot of them will.”
