K-Music Week In Review Part 2: Taeyeon, Ravi, Kim Dong Han and more!

With so many releases happening each week, we have split our weekly review into two articles to make things more convenient. Our Weekly K-music Review posts are here to give you a helping hand and a quick look back to the notable releases from Korean artists in a weekly format. This article looks at releases and comebacks from June 18 – 20 2018.

Taeyeon – Something New
Released: June 18

Making a very surprising comeback, Taeyeon from the girl group Girls Generation brings out her inner Imogen Heap electronic vocals in her retro solo comeback. Just like the title of the song, she has certainly gone for something new…and we are loving it! The song is extremely catchy and has a late 70’s early 80’s vibe to it. The music video is like watching a female James Bond, and we love the cinematography. Definitely one for our summer songs list for 2018.

Arkay – Because Of You (FEAT. Le.Ju’ce)
Released: June 18

Jeong Dong Su (Better known as Arkay) made his debut through the Korean music variety show Produce 101, joining forces with rapper Le.Ju’ce the duo have released the first AI digital single that was produced by a fan. A dance song with a contagious rhythm it’s a release meant for those summer nights out. The video is loud and fun, showcasing areas of Hong Kong and fitting well with the music.

Ravi (VIXX) – Pavlov’s Dog (FEAT. Cold Bay, Basick)
Released: June 18

Something that we like to see is when K-pop boy group rappers are given the freedom to expand their skills and release their own mixtapes to keep their creativity flowing. This isn’t the first time VIXX rapper Ravi has released his own work, but it seems that his work has taken a darker turn and his expressions have become more personal. It’s great to see a darker side to Ravi’s work, and to see more emotions, and we hope to see more like this release from him.

Hash – Trigger
Released: June 18

With smooth vocals enough to make anyone swoon and fall in love, Hash brings rock and roll to a new level with the release of Trigger. Aesthetically pleasing in its simplicity, the music video features some great camera edits in a single room setting. Musically the song is addictive and great for releasing the stress of the day. This is one of those you can sing or scream along to and feel invigorated afterwards.

Kim Dong Han – Sunset
Released: June 19

Why is it when an idol clicks their fingers you know it’s going to be a bop of a song? We weren’t wrong this time either, with a great mash-up of styles and genres which happen really abruptly, it’s as if the song stops being one style and instantly begins as a new song. The more you listen to the song as well, the more you notice about the backing track, like hidden vocals, instruments and sound effects. The music video is extremely sexy and will leave a lot of fans wanting more. The choreography is great and visually the colours are extremely pleasing. If this is the beginning, we can’t wait to see what else Kim Dong Han has to offer.

Kei.G – Vanilla
Released: June 19

Throwing the retro vibes out there in full technicolour visuals, Kei.G throws the viewers back into the 90’s and then brings the song and visuals to a more modern day. The mix of style both visually and vocally is completely unique, and with a backing track mixing soul, blues, jazz, pop and many other genres, there is bound to be a specific part of the song that truly captures you as a listener.

This week didn’t have many releases, but there are some great trailers being released for future music releases and comebacks from some of our favourite girl and boy groups – not to mention all the great releases from the indie and underground scene out in Korea. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the first article for this week’s K-music Review and be sure to join us in the future for more K-music Week In reviews.
