With so many releases happening each week, we have split our weekly review into two articles to make things more convenient. Our weekly K-music review posts are here to give you a helping hand and a quick look back to the notable releases from Korean artists in a weekly format. This article looks at releases and comebacks from 25 – 27 June 2018.

SHINee – Our Page
Released: 25 June

An extremely hard music video to watch, there is a lot of raw emotion for this release due to the meaning behind the song itself and the lyrics. With the sad loss of their member Jonghyun, the members wrote this song together with the thought of him in their minds. This was not only a way to show fans that he will forever be there with them, but also to show the fans that they are with them too. There is a very poignant moment in the music video where a single microphone stand is alone in the centre of the stage as time moves around the members, surrounded by their fans light colour. Yes that does signify Jonghyun, and yes, we did cry.

Amplixx – Break
Released: 25 June

Great rock music in Korea is hard to come by and while there are the odd few groups out there, they are very underrated. Amplixx have been a strong favourite as their music is reminiscent of the solo guitar samurai from Japan, Miyavi. Featuring their mascot in a cute animation, this is a lyric video for their new song Break, which includes some great drums, guitars, and keyboard riffs with some added digital glitching, it’s a great backing track. Also, the whole song is in English.

NU’EST W – Dejavu
Released: 25 June

As time has gone by, this boy group have grown in strength as a power group in leaps and bounds. The song is reminiscent of a Shaun Mendes song, yet still unique to its own style. The video is a mind cluster of weird and wonderful, with some great digs at time travel and surveillance. The members styling and the aesthetics of the entire video is right up our street, and we are completely enthralled by the whole production. From the song, lyrics, styling, and music video production. A dead set 10/10.

Junho (2PM) – Sang Sang
Released: 25 June

Although technically a Japanese song, Junho is from 2PM, and we know a great song when we hear one. This certainly ticks all the boxes for a great release. It’s also worth mentioning just how sexy the video is, from fantastic cinematography, close-ups, great visuals and intense vocals, with a story narrated throughout the video by Junho. Stick around till the end; you get a glimpse of the real Junho who is the cheeky chappy we are so used to. It’s great to see him exploring his musical side in addition to his acting career. It’s also great to be able to concentrate fully on just his vocals rather than that as part of a group.

Lim Jae Hyun, Moon Seong Wook – With A Smile
Released: 25 June

Sometimes it is good to take a step back from all the loud and intense songs that are coming out at the moment. A good ballad is always a welcome change, and this time Lim Jae Hyun and Moon Seong Wook are here to deliver an emotionally driven song for the soul. With strong vocals that start as a whisper, they grow into something much more powerful. This is a truly sad song and you can feel it through the simplicity of the music video that they want the audience to listen to the story.

Gfriend – Wanna Be
Released: 25 June

Drama soundtracks are still the rage right now, and Gfriend has the perfect upbeat, fun and charming song for the latest hit K-drama What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, which stars the actor Park Seo Joon. The video shows some key clips of the playful and sometimes painful to watch loving moments between the two main characters, and the song fits perfectly with the mood.

Lim Ji Eun – The Longing Dance
Released: 25 June

We have been waiting for this to be released officially before introducing it. Were you a fan of the hit K-drama series Goblin? Then you might be able to recognise the sound, style, vibe and visual key points within the song and music video. In a mix of Enya and Kate Bush, this song is ethereal, soft, yet so powerful in its execution. There is a lot of emotion attached to the song and this is shown through the music video which shows key moments of the K-drama Are You Human Too? An absolutely stunning song, and hopefully we’ll see much more from Lim Ji Eun in the future.

Day6 – Shoot Me!
Released: 26 June

Every time Day6 release a new song, we always say that it is their best and there is no way they can top it. But it seems that they have done it once again with the release of Shoot Me! Showing their skills as a band, they have managed to create a unique song that’s powerful, strong and extremely addictive. This is one where you’ll want to stand up and stamp your feet into the ground as hard as you can whilst letting your hair down. The music video is just as powerful and includes some great visuals, lighting and camera edits. You’ll want to watch this video, it’s completely worth it.

MoMoLand – Baam!
Released: 26 June

With girl groups such as Orange Caramel and Crayon Pop not making any comebacks and falling off the face of the earth, it seems that MoMoLand has seen a gap for the not-so-serious music video with the ultra-catchy and addictive song. After their smash hit BBoom BBoom, this new track mixes the summer early 90’s Britpop dance track with some great costume changes and easy to follow choreography. This an all-kill super release that’s guaranteed to get you tapping your fingers and humming along all day.

Jeebanoff – School
Released: 27 June

Lo-Fi has become an internet sensation, mixing jazz, white noise and ASMR sound effects with calm and soft vocals whilst being accompanied by a GIF video that’s usually based on anime. These are the songs you expect to listen to in a trendy coffee shop as you sip your iced Americano. Jeebanoff has had a long history of creating some great Lo-Fi songs, and once again he has brought a classic sound to the modern music world, mixing a slight underground hip-hop vibe with Lo-Fi. It’s a great song, and a great way to unwind from a busy and stressful day.
