Our Weekly K-music Review posts are here to give you a helping hand and a quick look back to the notable releases from Korean artists in a weekly format. This article looks at releases and comebacks from 14 – 17 June  2018.

Jay Park – SOJU (FEAT. 2Chainz)
Released: 14 June

Having conquered the Korean rap scene and with a deep history of entertainment behind him, Jay Park recently signed with American music label Roc Nation with a promise to bring his skills and style to a wider audience. SOJU is his first song under the label, with the support of legendary rapper 2Chainz behind him. He brings a Korean flare to the western music charts that’s different to your average K-pop. Keeping with his underground routes, he has amped up the bass to please western ears, yet kept his same swaggering style he is known and loved for.

Bae In Hyuk – Do Not Disturb
Released: 14 June

With a very distinctive vocal range that’s slightly untrained and husky, there is something very mystical and enthralling about this release. The song starts off soft and works up to a great motivational beat that is very addictive and will leave you tapping along. Visually the video is quite basic, but they have done such a great job with what options they did have (the lighting is certainly very aesthetic).

Blackpink – Ddu-du Ddu-du
Released: 15 June

One of the most anticipated comebacks of the year from YG Entertainment in terms of girl groups, Blackpink are finally back with yet another very addictive, catchy and fun song. Showing girl power with aggressive rapping skills, empowering lyrics and some great fashion and styling throughout the music video, the new release is set to be one of the songs for summer.

Rad Museum – Tiny Little Boy (FEAT.Dean)
Released: 15 June

Yet another great release from the underground and indie scene in Korea, Rad Museum is well known for their chilled mixed genre songs. Once again they have created a completely unique sound whilst breaking their own boundaries and collaborating with hip-hop/R&B artist Dean. With a continuous guitar backing, and a mix of different tempos and backing tracks, the vocals tell a story and create the song at the same time.

Yang Yoseop – On The Road
Released: 17 June

As the lead singer for the K-pop boy group Highlight, Yoseop has always had a way to make fans swoon after hearing his voice, but when placed amongst the other members his skills are sometimes overshadowed. Working on his solo releases we are able to hear the true strength behind his voice. The music video tells a love story between two students. A word of warning – you may need your tissues as it is a tear-jerker when paired with the song.

There aren’t many releases for the first half of this week, but it looks like the second part will be filled to the brim with great releases. Be sure to check back for the second installment of  K-music week in review, which will look at releases from June 18 – 20 2018.
