Fantasy tearjerker Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms comes to the big screen this Wednesday, with one-night-only screenings in selected cinemas across the UK.

The directorial debut of noted anime screenwriter Mari Okada (The Anthem of the Heart, AnoHana), Maquia is produced by P.A.Works and tells the story of the titular Maquia (Manaka Iwami), a young girl whose long-lived Iolf people do not age beyond their teens.

When her town is attacked by invaders seeking the secret of their longevity, Maquia flees into the forest, where she discovers an orphaned baby. Naming him ‘Ariel’, Maquia raises the child as her own son – but as Ariel (Miyu Irino) grows older, her looks remain the same.

Tickets and screening times for Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, which is released in the UK by Anime Limited, are available here.
