UK anime companies announce new pick-ups at MCM London

MCM London is the traditional venue for the UK’s anime distributors to announce new titles and last weekend’s Comic Con was no exception, with an array of upcoming releases being teased over the three days of the ExCel event.

Half a dozen of those new pick-ups come courtesy of MVM Entertainment, with the Monmouthshire-based company announcing the acquisition of girls ‘n’ motorcycles series Bakuon!!; devilish fanservice-filled drama Seven Mortal Sins; supernatural show Sagrada Reset; murder mystery When They Cry; two seasons of Star-Myu – aka High School Star Musical – and the second series of fantasy actioner The Heroic Legend of Arslan.

However, the lion’s share of new announcements comes from Anime Limited. New titles slated for 2018 include Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card, with the Glasgow distributor bullish about snagging more of the franchise in the future; Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky and both seasons, film and OVA of Mobile Suit Gundam 00; and Sound! Euphonium Season 1, a previous Anime Limited pick-up that fell through last October to the consternation of the KyoAni slice-of-life show’s UK fans.

Also on Anime Limited’s docket are chilled-out Production I.G. diving drama Amanchu!; Masaaki Yuasa movie Lu Over the Wall (16 July); Trigger sci-fi show Kiznaiver (30 July) and classic CLAMP series Angelic Layer (late Q3). They’ll be joined by an ‘Ultimate Edition’ of Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue, featuring a brand new remaster; NHK documentary Hayao Miyazaki: Never-Ending Man; and a Cowboy Bebop 20th Anniversary Edition that includes all of the TV series soundtracks on CD. And speaking of music, Anime Limited is also planning to release the official FLCL soundtrack on vinyl.

We’ve yet to mention the third member of British anime’s Big Three, Manga Entertainment. Not because the London distributor doesn’t have much in store, but because it already announced its summer slate in the weeks leading up to MCM London. There are a few new releases confirmed, however – most notably Food Wars Season 2 on 13 August, Takashi Miike’s live action JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable on 27 August and, for some time in 2018, another Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! film, Take On Me.
