Nintendo will continue to support the 3DS

February marked seven years since the Nintendo 3DS was first launched. Given its recent sales figures, the handheld console has sold over 72 million units worldwide. Releases may be few and far between, with the last big game released across Europe being Detective Pikachu back in March. There’s also Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker to look forward to later this year. However, Nintendo wants you to know that they are not giving up on the 3DS.

As reported on Nintendo Life, Nintendo’s investor Q&A with President Tatsumi Kimishima and soon-to-be President Shuntaro Furukawa saw the two answering questions about their partnership with Cygames and future sales of the Switch. They were also asked whether the 3DS could coexist alongside the Switch.

“It has an ample software lineup at a price point that makes the system affordable especially for parents looking to buy for their kids,” said Kimishima. “We expect that demand to continue during this fiscal year as well, so we will continue to sell the product.”

He also added how both are portable, but the Switch is clearly more expensive, saying, “Given that Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system that can be taken on the go, this situation may change if it grows from being a one-per-household system to a one-per-person system. But the price of Nintendo Switch is not something with which most parents would buy a system for every one of their children in a short period of time. Moving forward, we will work to ascertain what kinds of play people want at which price points, and as long as there is such demand, we will continue to sell the Nintendo 3DS system. I see the product coexisting with Nintendo Switch at this point in time.”

So, until your home has more than one Nintendo Switch, you’ll still be able to StreetPass with your 3DS.
