Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S05E12 The Real Deal review

Airing Sundays at 9pm in the UK on E4
Writers:
Drew Z Greenberg
Director:
Jeffrey Bell, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon

Essential Plot Points:

  • The explosion has destroyed three monoliths and created a rift into another dimension. A fear dimension. And it’s leaking fear into our world.
  • Fitz has a plan to seal the breach but someone might be sucked into the dimension when that happens. Coulson, who is dying, volunteers.
  • Deke runs some errands, tracking down S.H.I.E.L.D. members and other personal items. Deathlok helps Coulson face his fear, while his other purchases allow Gemma and Fitz to get married.

Review:

It’s the 100th episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and finally there’s a quieter moment for the team – shame it comes as the news breaks that Coulson is dying. The Ghost Rider burned through his extended lifespan and undid the Kree tech, and he’s all used up. The team’s reactions are spot-on given everything they’ve been through together, as if a cherished family member has been diagnosed with the big C, sharing all the tears and heartbreak that goes with it.

The fear element of the episode, not a unique concept by any stretch, actually gets a good run out here. Coulson’s fears could be behemoth-like city-sucking creatures, but facing his own death provides a cleverer head-messing element.

The momentary pause is also a chance for Fitz and Simmons to seal the deal and get married. How’s that for beating a universe that’s tried to curse your relationship? After all the battles and all the escapes, it’s a rare tender moment for team S.H.I.E.L.D.

Many shows would have blown the budget for episode 100, or iced a major character, but this is the perfect way for this team to mark that milestone.

The Good:

  • It’s great to see some familiar faces come back to help celebrate the anniversary.
  • The reveal that Deke is Gemma and Fitz’s grandson only gives us further hope that their relationship has beaten the universe’s supposed curse.

The Bad:

  • Seriously, enough with the Zima.

Best Quotes:

Nice way for Deke to inadvertently break the news about his family ties, before General Hale’s assistant confirms he is their grandson:
“I found this one [ring] that looks just like this one that my mom used to wear sometimes. It was my grandma’s, I think.”
