Following recent threats of anime-style visual novels being removed from sale on Steam, popular VN publisher MangaGamer has reached an agreement with GOG.com to bring their catalogue to the digital store.

So far, the company has launched the Higurashi When They Cry series and eden* on GOG, but it also plans to bring Kindred Spirits on the Roof to the store too. The pioneering adult visual novel was one of the many recently targeted along with the likes of HuniePop, Mutiny!! and Nekopara for ‘violating Steam’s rules and guidelines for pornographic content’ despite being available on the service since 2016.

“This opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time,” said MangaGame’s PR director, John Pickett. “We had been speaking with GOG prior to recent events about adding visual novels as a genre to their retail platform, and with Valve now threatening the livelihoods of visual novel developers everywhere, it’s a huge relief to see GOG opening their doors to these games,”

MangaGamer’s visual novels are also joined by a number of titles from Sekai Project and all are currently available for up to 67% off for a limited time.

As for the current issues with Steam, the reported games are still being re-reviewed, so the future is still unclear for many developers who rely on Valve’s popular digital store.
