As we are mid-month there aren’t many releases this week, so things tend to go a bit slower. But we have been blessed with some great songs from the few who have released their latest tracks. From opera, rap, ballad and soul, there is something for everyone, and some great genres to explore.

Our Weekly K-music Review posts are here to give you a helping hand and a quick look back to the notable releases from Korean artists in a weekly format. This article looks at releases and comebacks from 3 – 6 May 2018.

Kim Soo Yeon – LaLaLa
Released: 3 May

Classically trained in opera, Kim Soo Yeon has the most mesmerising vocals that fit well with the up-tempo soft Mexican orchestral music. As we like to introduce people to different genres of music, hopefully you will take the time to drop the stigma surrounding opera and classical music and just give this song a chance. It’s the kind of song you would expect to hear in a Studio Ghibli or Disney movie.

(G)I-DLE – Latata
Released: 3 May

Reggaeton is still one of this year’s big genres to hit the K-pop scene, and with the levels of talent forever pulling the bar higher and higher, debuting needs as a new girl group in a male-dominated industry means that trends are going to be your best way to make an impact. Luckily, trends are not needed with (G)I-DLE as their talent certainly shows with their debut showcase released single. They definitely have their own flair, their own vibe and are ready to take the industry by the horns.

Loco – Party Band (FEAT. Punchnello, Thur) + Oppa
Released: 3 May

In a style that is distinctly his own, Loco is back to make his fans swoon with his cool vibes and smooth rapping skills. Mixing a slow tempo and working it to a faster beat for the chorus, there are some great sound bytes and editing throughout the song that does like to mess with your mind when you have headphones on. There’s also a complete change of style midway through the song when he begins his second song Oppa. Loco keeps it real and certainly knows what a summer track needs for it to be a hit.

Tarin – Don’t Worry Be Happy (FEAT. Peter Han)
Released: 4 May

Having watched enough K-dramas to last a lifetime, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to hear this song in the latest rom-com. Upbeat, fun, light and happy, there really isn’t anything you can’t like about this lovingly put together summery duet. Both singers have a great harmonisation and the atmosphere is perfect for a theme of love.

Junny – Same Thoughts (FEAT. Holynn – PROD. HolyMoley)
Released: 5 May

The indie scene is certainly hitting all the right chords this time of the year, and so it’s great to see that Junny is back with one of the smoothest chill tracks of the year. Vocally the song can easily put you into a dream state and the backing music is actually pretty haunting. Be sure to show some support to these indie artists; they certainly don’t get enough love.

Yang Soobin – Just Once
Released: 5 May

K-drama soundtracks are making a huge impact on the music industry, introducing indie singers and songwriters whilst blessing our ears with some absolutely stunning songs. Yang Soobin’s release is no different. The perfect sad and romantic song for those nights when you want a bit of emotion in your life. The song has been paired with some key clips from the drama Tempted (The Great Seducer) along with some face shots of Yang Soobin, who many will recognise as the Mukbang vlogger that went viral with her fringe cutting antics.

BTS – Singularity (Love Yourself: Tear)
Released: 6 May

With their upcoming album being the hottest talk of the town, many have been waiting for their comeback trailer, which thankfully follows in the footsteps of Jimin’s Serendipity or Jungkook’s Euphoria. An extremely stylish and aesthetically pleasing video based off of a multitude of artwork which is suspected to show a change in BTS’s current styling, both visually and musically. The song is slow, soulful and only features the member V in his first solo released song. A key favourite part is V’s vocals around the 1:20 mark, it gives us chills.

GOT7 – The New Era
Released: 6 May

Although this is a Japanese release from GOT7, it would be wrong to leave this out. Showing a huge growth in style, vocally and musically, The New Era is certainly a great expression of what’s happening. The song is upbeat, loud, garish and shouty, perfect for those nights you want to let loose and go crazy.
