Deadpool 2 movie review

Deadpool crashed the superhero party back in 2016 like a coked-up comedian doing a set on ’80s movies, ensuring lots of dark humour and plenty of action. Deadpool 2 is a film that very much (re)lives and dies on that same heady mix. So can lightning strike twice for Ryan Reynolds’ alter ego?

This shirt-cocking, vomit spraying, teabagging sequel hasn’t let success go to its head and pulled the trigger on a film that’s too out of control, instead opting for the same blend of gross-out comedy and breakneck sequences as the original. Sure, there’s less fourth wall pranks (although it’s worth watching those credits roll to see some fine examples), but given the addition of time travel thanks to an appearance by Cable (Josh Brolin), that’s no bad thing.

Just when Deadpool 2 needs a kick up the prison wallet, Cable ups the action in a big way – his blast into the past turning up the temperature almost as much as Fire Fist’s powers.

Throw in callbacks to gags from the first film, a soundtrack that’s been tweaked to perfection, the extremely cool addition of luck box Domino (Zazie Beetz) and a hilarious first mission for X-Force, and this is a triumph. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll shield your eyes at the horror of Wade’s naked body, as this formula for fun gets its mix just right. Reviewed by Matt Chapman
