Rumours were finally confirmed, the next addition to the Battlefield franchise is called Battlefield V and it’s going to take us back to WWII. Let’s hope the campaign mode is better than Call of Duty’s last attempt.

Battlefield V will focus extensively on party-based features and mechanics, scarcity of resources, and removing “abstractions” from game mechanics to increase realism. There will be an expanded focus on player customization through the new Company system, where players will be able to create multiple characters with various cosmetic and weapon options. Cosmetic items, and currency used to purchase others, will be earned by completing in-game objectives.

The game will feature several new multiplayer modes, including the “continuous” campaign mode “Tides of War”, and “Grand Operations”, an expansion of the “Operations” mode introduced in Battlefield 1 that focuses on matches taking place across multiple stages to simulate a campaign from the war. In Grand Operations, each round will have specific objectives, and performance in each stage will influence the next. Games will culminate with a “Final Stand”, with players using only a primary weapon with limited ammo, and no respawns. Similarly to Battlefield 1, the game will feature a collection of single-player “war stories” based on aspects of World War II.

The game was revealed during a livestream to fans around the world and will tell a series of stories from World War II. Locations include the freezing cold of Norway, the dry heat of North Africa and the expanse of the French countryside. EA says it’ll be aiming to tell “untold stories” from the war that are inspired by significant historical events at the various fronts across the globe.

One story that’s been teased is the story of a Norwegian resistance fighter who is trying desperately to protect her family during the 1943 German occupation. As was the case in Battlefield 1, War Stories will be a mode that tries to inject emotion into the Battlefield experience.

There will also be no premium pass, so everybody gets to play all the maps just by owning the base game.

The game’s announcement trailer was met with a backlash from some fans of the series who criticized the game for a lack of historical accuracy. Many highlighted the trailer’s large focus on female frontline soldiers that they felt was an exercise in political correctness. Further complaints were given to the portrayal of weapons, prosthetics, and other customization of characters that otherwise would have been very uncommon in that time period.

Battlefield V will be released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 19, 2018.
