After releasing a series of videos with the cast of 13 Reasons Why out of character, Netflix has now released the first teaser trailer for season two, revealing that it will premiere on the streaming service on 18 May.

Based on Jay Asher’s book, season one told the story of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), a student who committed suicide. Two weeks after her death, her friend Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) receives a box of tapes recorded by Hannah, detailing the 13 reasons that led her to take her life. Season two delves into a series of Polaroid photos doing the rounds, as Clay and his fellow classmates uncover a secret.

Played to the sound of Depeche Mode’s I Feel You, the teaser shows the characters Tony Padilla (Christian Navarro), Jessica Davis (Alisha Boe), Mr. Porter (Derek Luke), Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice), Olivia Baker (Kate Walsh) and Clay Jensen, while Polaroid photos around them expose what they’re thinking and feeling. The use of Polaroids (even the sound of a photo being taken at the end of the teaser) have some speculating that school photographer Tyler Down (Devin Druid) is likely to be a significant character in the second season.

Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Brian Yorkey said that the second season will not feature another suicide. The show explores many themes but the main focus will be a trial. “Hannah Baker’s parents [played by Brian d’Arcy James and Kate Walsh], are suing the school district for their responsibility in Hannah’s death,” said Yorkey. “Over the course of the season, the trial unfolds. The kids are called in to testify, we get to hear their side of the story, secrets are revealed and we learn things we didn’t know before.”
