UK Anime Round-Up 2-8 April: Superpowered, Supernatural & Slightly Sexy

As well as bringing plenty of April showers to the UK, the Easter weekend has also delivered a bumper crop of new anime to our rain-soaked shores. Heading the list is the first installment of superhero show My Hero Academia’s second season.

Released on Blu-ray and DVD by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, My Hero Academia Season 2, Part 1 continues the escapades of Izuku ‘Deku’ Midoriya at U.A. High School – and the first half of the new season is taken up with the annual sports festival. Being a school for superheroes, it’s less about the long jump and egg-and-spoon races and more about students beating seven bells out of each other in an ever-flashier series of battles.

Speaking of over-the-top action, this week also gives a big welcome to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Season 1, out of Blu-ray from Manga UK. The 26 episode box set (which includes a 160-page art book) plunges us into the muscle-bound adventures of Jonathan Joestar and his equally beefy descendants as they battle their power-hungry nemesis Dio Brando.

Also from Manga UK comes Occultic;Nine Volume 1 – the first six episodes of a fast-talking supernatural anime adapted from the light novels of Chiyomaru Shikura, creator of the popular Steins;Gate. Centring on 17-year-old occult blogger Yuta Gamon, this A-1 Pictures series features a murdered professor, a lake-full of corpses and some almighty plot twists.

Sticking with the supernatural, albeit with an ecchi harem vibe, Monster Musume is finally out as a standard DVD (although we’ll have to wait ‘til next week for the Blu-ray). MVM released Monster Musume as a collector’s edition back in February, but if you didn’t snag the series then, this tale of a lad and his lovely monster girls is well worth a watch – you can check out our full review here.

If the titillating triumvirate of supernatural, ecchi and harem anime calls to you, Anime Limited’s The Testament of Sister New Devil might just be your thang. Available as a Blu-ray Collector’s Edition and standard DVD, the show stars high schooler Basara Tojo and his cute new stepsisters Mio and Maria – who also happen to be a demon lord and a succubus.

Anime Limited’s second release of the week is a rather different proposition; accompanied by a 128-page book by Jonathan Clements Momotaro, Sacred Sailors is a black and white propaganda cartoon from 1945 …and the first Japanese feature-length animated film.
