There’s a new Doom movie in development at Universal

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson may have moved on to different gaming-infused franchises with both Rampage and Jumanji counting as a couple of his latest credits, but Universal isn’t quite ready to give up on Doom yet. It’s been revealed that a new film based on the iconic FPS series has entered production.

The news first came about in a Tweet from actor Nina Bergman, who wrote: “Wow, I’m doing the next ‘Doom’ movie with Universal Pictures! I just signed all the paperwork. I get to go back to Bulgaria again and work with some of my favorite people. This movie with a super cool director AND my new record coming out, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”

A spokesperson for NBC/Universal has since confirmed the project’s existence to Variety and announced that it is in development at Universal 1440 Entertainment. This division produces live-action and animated non-theatrical productions, which suggests the new Doom may be skipping the cinema and going directly to DVD or streaming platforms.

Considering how much of a flop the original 2005 film was, this may be the most sensible choice. This time around, however, the film does follow the tremendously successful Doom of 2016. That may increase interest if it can match the style and tone of that terrific reboot.

We may even have some more Doom to look forward to in the gaming world soon. Bethesda marketing and communications man, Pete Hines, recently said in an interview with Dualshockers that “this is the hell on Earth time for us with E3.” Is that a reference to the original game’s sequel, Doom II: Hell on Earth? We see you, Pete.
