Sony to discontinue the PlayStation Vita?

When it comes to handheld consoles, Sony’s powerful PlayStation Vita has always struggled against Nintendo’s 3DS. Both were first released in 2011, and while Sony would not disclose sales figures for the PS Vita, it is estimated to have sold 15 million units worldwide by mid-2017 (as a comparison, by the end of 2017 had Nintendo sold over 70 million units of the 3DS worldwide). Now it would appear that Sony is set to discontinue the PS Vita.

As reported on Techspot, Sony has not made any official announcement, but merely responded to someone on Twitter. Spanish YouTuber PORTADICTOS revealed that it was impossible to purchase a brand new PS Vita in his country. PlayStation España replied saying that the PlayStation Vita “is effectively discontinued.”

Sony already discontinued production of the PlayStation 3 in May 2013 and revealed that from March 2019, PlayStation Plus subscribers will no longer receive games for the PS3 and PS Vita, which will solely focus on PS4 titles.

While it would appear that you can no longer find a brand new PlayStation Vita in Spain, it remains to be seen as to whether this will extend to the rest of the world too.
