Paramount teases Coming to America sequel

Eddie Murphy has made some epic movies in his time, most notably, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Raw and Coming to America and these have their place in the annuals of influential 80s pop-culture firmly cemented.

Rumors have circulated about a possible sequel to Coming to America for some time, ever since Eddie Murphy tweeted about it last March…then promptly deleted that tweet, along with his entire account. According to MovieWeb, Murphy didn’t actually authorize that tweet from his social media team, which is what led to his account being shut down. Thankfully, a screengrab still exists online.

Then in September last year, Variety reported that Paramount was moving forward on the sequel with Jonathan Levine on board to direct from a script by “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris.

And yesterday, Paramount has further fueled the rumor by teasing its upcoming movie slate at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, which included Coming to America 2.

Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos took the stage to discus some of the studio’s upcoming slate — ranging from sequels to Top Gun and World War Z to spin-offs in the Transformers and Cloverfield series — and to the surprise of the audience, he personally confirmed that Paramount is not working on just one new Star Trek film with partner Skydance Pictures…but two.

The original, epic Coming to America was released in 1988, directed by the talented John Landis and co-written by Murphy himself. It also starred Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley and James Earl Jones and featured cameos from Samuel L. Jackson and Eriq La Salle.

The restaurant that doubled as McDowells (a hilarious McDonaldsrip-off) was actually a Wendy’s diner at 85-07 Queens Blvd, NY, which has sadly since been demolished. But that hasn’t stopped faithful fans from keeping the memory alive and for Halloween last year, a diner in Hollywood, CA called Fat Sal’s Deli transformed itself into McDowells, complete with proper uniforms, an Employee of the Month framed picture with Akeem, Zamunda fries and a milkshake called ‘Sexual Chocolate’.

“Look… me and the McDonald’s people got this little misunderstanding. See, they’re McDonald’s… I’m McDowell’s. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds.”

We will of course keep you posted as more news of this incredible story breaks.
