Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai of the Future is set to become the first ever Japanese animated film to get its world premiere at Cannes. The French Directors’ Guild today announced that Mirai will screen as part of next month’s 50th anniversary edition of Directors’ Fortnight, an independent section held in parallel to May’s Cannes Film Festival.
The latest film from the director of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars and Wolf Children, fantasy adventure Mirai is slated to receive a UK and Ireland theatrical release this Q4 from Anime Limited. The film sees spoiled little boy Kun meet Mirai – his (now not so) little sister who journeys back in time from the future to take him on a time-travelling trip to meet his mum as a little girl and his great-granddad as a young man.
