With so many releases happening this week, we have split our weekly review into two articles to make things more convenient. Our Weekly K-music Review posts are here to give you a helping hand and a quick look back to the notable releases from Korean artists in a weekly format. This article looks at releases and comebacks from 23 April – 25 April 2018

Tagger – Interview
Released: April 22

The K-Hip-Hop scene has been quiet of late, especially for the more underground artists, but Tagger has bought it back to relevancy with his latest release Interview. Visually the music video is raw, aesthetic with its colours, but also has a cheaper feeling to it, linking it with the lyrics of the song. Vocally, Tagger’s rapping is a little disjointed, speaking his words at a slightly faster pace in a monotoned voice, rather than truly rap. The result is not bad, if not the strongest release this week, and its especially good to see some underground artists in the charts.

Lovelyz – That Day
Released: April 23

With a predominantly large amount of boy groups within the K-pop industry, it’s always great to see a girl group making a comeback. Keeping to their usual innocent and cute approach to their releases, Lovelyz have played it safe and kept to what they are best at. The song is a typical girl group song, but when mixed with some of the member’s strong vocals, it gets a big lift. Upbeat, and slightly retro ’80s, the song is great for those of you looking for love.

Hwang In Sun – Dead Clock
Released: April 23

We are completely in love with the aesthetics of the music video for Dead Clock. Those visuals tell a story that’s given extra feeling by Hwang In Sun’s vocals. Naturally for a power ballad, there’s a powerful performance, although the added bonus of the rap halfway through really does add something different. For those wondering, the handsome vampire male lead in the music video is Korean model Joo Wondae who is part of the Korean model youtube group Crew Jacuzzi.

NOVEL – Imperfetto (Feat. Dawn)
Released: April 23

Making a huge impact on our playlists, NOVEL plumbs the depths of his soul to spread joy with his Latino, jazz, upbeat dance track Imperfetto. Simple in its execution, NOVEL’s vocals carry the song well. We do love the vocal play near the end of the song – and it’s really easy to learn, so watch out, or you will be singing along in no time.

Snuper – Tulips
Released: April 23

Bringing their boyish charms back once again, Snuper are presenting a slightly playful and more mature side to themselves. Vocally, they have grown leaps and bounds, they seem to have graduated from the cliche boy group sound that is highly overused in K-pop. Although the music itself is slightly samey to other songs we have heard this year, their experience is now shining and they have made a positive impact.

Umbrella In The Rain – The Forest Fairies
Released: April 23

Fan’s of the Korean music scene back in the late ’80s and early ’90s will definitely love this new release from Umbrella In The Rain. Sounding like a super-retro remake of a past song, the lyrics are precise, the vocals are dreamy, there’s some old school mixing, and the drum and guitar collaboration give the extra nod to that era. The music video is of night scenes of Seoul, showing some of the key places to hang out when visiting that city.

Luna – Night Reminiscin’ (FEAT. Yang Da-il)
Released: April 24

S.M. Entertainment‘s Luna from the girl group F(x) has collaborated with Yang Da-il for this beautiful ballad. With a simple piano for the background, which is accompanied by both of the artists’ powerful vocals, the song is touching. We highly recommend that you have your headphones on for this song, to truly touch your heart, but be prepared for those goosebumps – a truly stunning piece of work.

Shin Seol Hee – Are You Crying?
Released: April 24

Emotional, clean and precise, Shin Seol Hee has the ability to mix soft jazz with vocals on the same scale as Yoko Kanno. Why did we say Yoko? Because the song reminds us of one that could be featured on the anime series Cowboy Bebop or Wolf’s Rain, both of which Yoko created the soundtracks for. Shin Seol Hee’s vocals are soulful and heartfelt with the eerie lingering music in the background that gradually picks it’s pace up. Grab yourself a coffee and get comfortable, this is one of those hipster classics.

TheEastLight – Are You Okay?
Released: April 25

Mixing hip-hop with pop in the style of a boy group and a boy band sounds like a lot of genres to take on – but TheEastLight seems to have achieved a great outcome. Being unique both in style and sound, the group also flaunt their talents. There is an obvious mix of personalities within the group, which can be seen through the music video, but you can also hear it through the song and its lyrics. Vocally they aren’t the most powerful group, but when put together as a whole package, they are endearing. We look forward to seeing what they have to offer in the future.

Solar – It’s Been A Long Time
Released: April 25

Taking a more personal approach to her solo venture, Solar (of MaMaMoo) has allowed her personality to take the reins and lead the song. Mixing country, swing, rock, ballad and pop all in one, it’s definitely different. There are a lot of comedic moments throughout the song and music video, and it seems she didn’t want to take things too seriously – which is a bold statement in such a serious industry. There’s no doubting her vocal strength, and we would have liked to have seen a little bit more of that power coming through, but all in all its a great feel-good track.
