With so many releases happening each week, we have split our weekly review into two articles to make things more convenient. Our Weekly K-music Review posts are here to give you a helping hand and a quick look back to the notable releases from Korean artists in a weekly format. This article looks at releases and comebacks from 2 – 4 April 2018.

CLC – Distance
Released: 2 April

Ballad pop songs are one of the key genres in the K-pop world, and one of the safest ways to promote a group. But with CLC, their new release has a beautiful dance and ghostly appeal. The music video has prominent imagery, featuring some soft camera work and CGI effects. Although the group have played it safe, it feels like they have chosen to release a song that is a timeless classic and goes well with many moods.

Jungyup – Lost (PROD. Maktub)
Released: 2 April

Used as the soundtrack song for the K-drama Evergreen, the song has some heartbreaking lyrics mixed with some soft and well-controlled vocals. When placed together with the music video, which shows some sad scenes from the drama, you really feel the emotions behind the song. The softness of the song is one that reminds you of the type of songs you could listen to when holding a cup of coffee whilst the April showers hit the window.

Oh My Girl Banhana – Banana Allergy Monkey
Released: 2 April

Do not judge a song by its title, but do ask, “Is the song as crazy as the title seems?” The answer is yes, it really is as crazy as it looks. Fun, bright, bubbly and colourful, the music video will take you on a safari through time and space, with added cute girls and a backing story that doesn’t quite make sense. At the same time, all is forgiven for being a catchy song with such a great video.

Pentagon – Shine
Released: 2 April

Pentagon’s diversity with the music that they produce has seen them cover an endless array of genres such as pop, rap, R&B and EDM. As your typical boy group from Korea, there is a lot of personality within this release, and this is shown throughout their music video. There are moments that produced laughter and even an awkward cringe, but by the end of the song you want to hear more. A great release from Pentagon.

IMFACT – Truth
Released: 2 April

It is such a great surprise to see that IMFACT has released their soundtrack song for the K-drama Children Of A Lesser God as an official release. The group are less known for being the average K-pop idol and are becoming the kings of soundtracks. The song has a mix of power ballad and rock-pop and features some very powerful vocals. A truly great release.

Bigone – Wavywavywavy
Released: 2 April

Bringing the weekly dose of underground hip-hop, Bigone’s latest song features some trippy yet well put together electric background music, with some synthesizer and drum beats that create a modern feeling. The music video is raw and has an indie vibe, whereas the vocals are smooth and consistent to the style of the song.

TVXQ – Love Line
Released: 3 April

The second instalment of their comeback, Yunho and Changmin have taken the spring and summer vibe to a whole new level. Upbeat, fun with a soft dance track, the song will definitely have you up on your feet to dance along. The music video is modern, crisp and clean. It features some clever special effects and choreography of a high calibre, which is always expected from the TVXQ duo.

The Boyz – Giddy Up
Released: 3 April

Personal favourites from the rookie group, the song is upbeat, fun and has a great element of tongue-in-cheek humour, both in the lyrics and the music video. The choreography is on point, and we are completely in love with the whole production, from song to music video. If this song isn’t your aesthetic for spring 2018, then we don’t know what will be.

Primary, Anda – Dressroom
Released: 3 April

Bringing that retro 1970s electro vibe, Primary has joined together with the beautiful vocalist Anda, and produced an endless classic sounding song with an unforgettable beat. The controlled yet raw vocals fit really well with the upbeat and soft backing tune. If Korea ever produced their own version of Stranger Things, then this song would be featured on the soundtrack.

Flowsik x Jessi – Wet
Released: 4 April

Proving they are a power couple within the K-pop and K-hip-hop scene, this is the second collaboration song between the pair this year. The song has a great way of being raw and against the grain. Key lyrics and moments within the music video definitely caused raised eyebrows. The song isn’t out to shock, but it isn’t there to be walked over either.

Once again this week has had some amazing releases, and sadly they can’t all be added to the list. So a few special mentions go to Bill Stax and his release 24K (FEAT. Lobonabeat), which shows a more western approach to the hip-hop scene with a Korean twist.

Ballad singer Gunho expresses his feelings with the song Wait For You. The music video is simple, and the song itself is very simple and nostalgic. But the vocals are what make this such a memorable and soft-hearted song.

Basick is a huge name within the Korean underground rap scene and the K-hip-hop scene. To see him come back with the release of The Kid is a blessing. Although the song is a lot heavier than expected, it is the perfect song to introduce you to the skills that Basick is known for. A true legend of the Korean entertainment scene.
