The world of Trek is certainly abuzz with news at the moment, with sneak-peak pics and tidbits of info coming from the set of Star Trek: Discovery as season two begins production…and with the movies too.

Rumours of the R-rated Tarantino movie still abound, with current speculation suggesting it might be based on The Next Generation episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (season 3, episode 15). Then there’s whispers on the grapevine over whether CBS and Viacom will finally unite, which might mean that the Kelvin Timeline and Prime Universe could merge.

But there is some news that actually has been confirmed: Paramount recently announced at CinemaCon that it was working on two Trek movies…and that S.J. Clarkson will direct what’s being called Star Trek 4 from a script by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Sadly though, that’s all the facts. There was no mention of whether one of those Trek projects will be Tarantino’s, or whether Chris Hemsworth will return, or whether Simon Pegg will be killed by a lava monster in the first five minutes.

Variety notes that the Tarantino/J.J. Abrams Trek film is still in development, but “sources say it is still being written and would come after the fourth movie.”

Clarkson has a TV-orientated background, directing shows like Jessica Jones, The Defenders, and Life on Mars. Now, she can add “first woman to ever direct a Star Trek film” with the added pressure of injecting new life into the reboot series after the God-awful Star Trek Beyond (2016).

One potential stumbling block in a future “Star Trek” film with the current movie cast is that all of the principal actors are no longer under contract with the studio.

“Star Trek 4” was originally announced just days before Star Trek Beyond was released, with a story that involves Hemsworth returning to play Kirk’s father in a time travel plot. Yes, another one. [Yawn]

No release date for Star Trek 4 has been mentioned as yet.

A week ago, JJ Abrams confirmed that Victoria Mahoney will be the first black woman to take the second unit director role on a Star Wars film, which is also great news…however, you can’t help but feel this kind of thing should be so commonplace a fanfare isn’t required.
