Final Fantasy 15’s DLC plans for 2019 confirmed

Back in February, we caught wind that Final Fantasy 15 will be getting four more DLC episodes through 2019. Details were thin at the time, but at PAX East Square Enix has now confirmed exactly what we can expect from the seemingly eternal Final Fantasy game. Beware, some spoilers lie ahead.

Similar to the game’s previously released DLC, each episode will focus on an individual character – these include Ardyn, Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis.

As we already knew, Episode I: Ardyn will be released first in early 2019 and centre on the “resentment he harbored towards Lucis for over 2,000 years, and his clashes with the Astrals.”

Next up in Spring 2019 is the awkwardly titled Episode Side Story: Aranea, which will follow the Empire’s final day from the perspective of the game’s underutilised ally/antagonist. Perhaps this DLC will be a good opportunity to flesh out her story a little better than the main game, though we’ve no clue what the “Side Story” designation really means.

Episode II: Luna will follow shortly after and go further into her fate – “something which even death cannot save her from”. Spooky.

Lastly, there’s Episode III: Noctis and a return to the game’s original protagonist. This final DLC will see the hero “embark upon his final battle in order to attain the ideal future for all his people.” Sounds somewhat more hopeful that the game’s current ending, depending on what way you read it.

During the panel Square Enix also announced more updates coming to the game’s multiplayer mode, Comrades. A standalone version will be released this Summer if you and your pals want to go on a monster-slaying jolly around Eos. You’ll also be able to take your custom character into the main game.

While, on the one hand, it’s good to see Square Enix continues to support Final Fantasy 15 with all this post-release content, it does diminish the value of the game’s recently released Royal Edition. Many had expected that to be the conclusive version of the game, but it seems there are more stories still yet to tell.
