The first season of Westworld firmly established itself as an enthralling, cerebral sci-fi drama. Adapted by HBO, it’s based loosely on the 1973 movie of the same name written by Michael Crichton.

Fans have been falling over themselves in anticipation of the second season since the last episode aired in December 2016. Has it really been that long? The second season will premiere on 22nd April… and the most recent trailer that dropped during the Super Bowl was full of the cryptic messages that we’ve come to hope for.

The first season was called ‘The Maze’ by the showrunners – think of it as the first book in a series of novels – and now they’ve given us the title of the second season.

Writing and husband and wife team Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy said this during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“If the first season was a journey inward, this is a journey outward. This is a search for what is else is beyond the park, and what else is in the park. Are there more parks? How big is the park? What’s beyond the park? We think of our seasons as discrete components in the series, to the point where we’ve named our seasons. The first season was called ‘The Maze.’ The second season is called ‘The Door.’”

The first season focused on the hosts discovering their own identities and finding their way to autonomy, while the Man in Black was trying to make his way into the centre of the same maze in order to unlock its secrets. Now that the characters will seemingly turn their attention outwards, season 2 opens up a whole new world – or worlds – of possibility and potential for guests, hosts and Delos executives alike.
