Super Smash Bros. announced for Nintendo Switch

Yep, it’s happening. During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, Super Smash Bros. was finally announced for Nintendo Switch.

Dropping the surprise at the end of the presentation, the trailer shows two of Splatoon‘s inklings battling it out with each other in an all-out paint war. It’s not for another piece of Splatoon 2 news, however. Suddenly, the environment turns eerily dark and the Smash Bros. logo is reflected in the eye of the inkling girl. Cue much shouting and screaming from fans of the Nintendo fighter.

That’s about all we have at this stage, although from the teaser trailer we can assume the pair of inkling characters will be joining the roster alongside returning favourites such as Mario and Link.

It’s unclear too whether the game is an updated port of a previous entry in the series or a completely new instalment. A tweet from Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai, confirming that he is also involved in the project, does go some way to suggest it’s a completely new entry.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch is scheduled for release in 2018. Speculating for a moment, it could be released to coincide with the forthcoming launch of Nintendo’s paid online service for the console.

Meanwhile, the rest of yesterday’s Nintendo Direct show made a number of big announcements, including new info on Mario Tennis Aces, a new Splatoon 2 expansion, plus Switch ports of Undertale, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Okami HD.
