A TV series based on Capcom’s Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is in development, to be produced and financed by Entertainment One.

As reported on Deadline, the series will be executive produced by Joey Ansah, Jacqueline Quella and Mark Wooding. The trio had produced the series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, which was also written, directed and starring Ansah. Released by Machinima as a web series on YouTube in 2014, it garnered over 16 million views.

The story of the World Warrior series will be pretty close to that of the game, with the focus on four characters, Ryu, Ken, Guile and Chun-Li. Their paths cross as they are drawn into the World Warrior Tournament, a competition devised by M. Bison, the evil mastermind behind the criminal organisation Shadaloo. They eventually end up working together to take down M. Bison.

“We are thrilled to be teaming up with Joey, Jacqueline and Mark, who are already so deeply connected to this brand, to bring this adored story to television audiences everywhere,” said Mark Gordon, Entertainment One’s President and Chief Content Officer. “A particular strength of Street Fighter is the wide range of ethnically diverse characters and powerful women featured in the game. It will allow us to build an inclusive and engaging TV universe.”

Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono, executive producer on Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter V video games was also pleased to be working with Entertainment One, saying, “After a long search, guided by the team behind Assassin’s Fist, we are delighted to be partnering with a company with the outstanding TV experience of Mark Gordon and eOne. They have the credentials to help us launch a faithful adaptation of Street Fighter as a major TV series.”

When promoting Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist at MCM London Comic Con back in 2014, Ansah said that he originally wrote the web series that focused on Ryu and Ken based on the story arc of Street Fighter II. A series based on the World Warrior had been in development ever since Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist was finished. On doing a series based on the World Warrior, Ansah said, “there’s no point in doing it unless we can do it the right way.”

He also revealed back then what he would want to see in second series with the World Warrior, saying, “Ryu and Ken are now in America, we’re going to see the Street Fighter world tournament, at least Sagat getting the scar, Ken’s gonna kick ass in the US, there’s obviously the Gouken and Akuma showdown that everyone is waiting to see, then introduce Shadaloo and the captains of Shadaloo – Vega, Balrog, Sagat and Bison. You could do an entire series on Shadaloo.”

It is not yet known if any of the cast from Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, or the series Street Fighter: Resurrection (released as a prologue to the game Street Fighter V) will be reprising their roles for the World Warrior series.
