Shiver manga review…

The creator of horror titles such as Tomie, Uzumaki and Gyo, Junji Ito is a master of the uncanny, unsettling and grotesque tale, and this new publication brings together some of his personal favourites.

As a ‘best of’ collection, some of Shiver’s stories have already seen a Western release, (for example, Painter is a chapter taken from Tomie), while others are new. Used Record focuses on an addictive jazz recording by a dead scat singer. Marionette Mansion follows a man whose brother has turned himself and his family into puppets. The Long Dream is about a neurosurgeon’s encounter with a patient whose nightly dreams seem to last for years, then decades, then centuries. Meanwhile, Fashion Model follows an indie filmmaker working with a model who has extremely unconventional looks.

Shiver’s final story, Greased Oil, is the most gruesome of them all. It features a family living in a poorly-ventilated restaurant that becomes saturated with oil and grease; the teenage son even drinking bottles of vegetable oil. This results in him developing terrible acne that he uses to scare his little sister; one scene where he bursts all of his spots (pictured here) is genuinely stomach-turning.

While Shiver contains some tales that may already be familiar to Junji Ito fans, this book does offer plenty of extras; not only commentary from Ito himself, but also rough sketches with translated notes explaining how the stories were written and developed. As this collection ably demonstrates, Ito’s body horror is both gripping and incredibly creepy. Reviewed by Ian Wolf
