Sega’s Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is released on the PS4 on 17 April 2018. But some gamers were been able to play it much earlier after it turned out Sega’s demo of the game was actually the full game.

Titled the Prologue Demo, it was released on 27 February. The official Twitter account for Yakuza revealed that all achievements and progress made within the demo would be transferred to the full game. Some questioned the 36GB file size, which seemed rather huge for a demo.

As reported on Siliconera, around nine hours after the Prologue Demo was released, Sega removed it and then released the following statement on social media:

We apologize, but have had to remove the Yakuza 6: The Song of Life demo from the PlayStation Store. We are as upset as you are, and had hoped to have this demo available for everyone today. We discovered that some were able to use the demo to unlock the full game. We’re looking into the nature of the issue. Thank you for your patience.

Sega’s wording makes it sound like some gamers managed to find a way to hack the demo, allowing them to gain access to the whole game. Yet according to those who had played the demo, after completing Chapter 1 and expecting the demo to be over… it wasn’t. Chapter 2 started, and they were still able to keep playing.

Given that you are able to make progress and earn achievements in the Prologue Demo, Sega might have intended for players to unlock the rest of the game by paying for it, thus saving them another huge download. If that was the case, it would seem that the code to lock the game after Chapter 1 was not there in the demo.

While the full game only happened to accidentally become available to gamers in North America, the demo has since been pulled worldwide.
