Ready Player One, the absolutely final trailer

We thought this was going to be the last trailer before the film opened…but Warner Brothers have felt we deserve one more. No argument here.

The movie opens to the Joe Public in two weeks, on March 29th and it’s drawn a mixed reaction from the premiere at SXSW at the weekend.

Some said that the constant barrage of pop culture references didn’t detract from what they called a mediocre story and lazy worldbuilding. Others said the references weren’t given context and instead thrown around haphazardly in an attempt to pander.

We’ll find out in two weeks. People will be going back to it, that’s guaranteed, whether it’s at home on 4K or Blu-ray, or return trips to the cinema, largely because there’s so many easter eggs.

For example, as the motorbike from Akira (1988) hurtles down a street within the Oasis, smashing into other vehicles, we see for a split second (at 1:29) a movie theatre marquee showing “Schwarzenegger – Jack Slater III” from the thoroughly excellent and under-rated Last Action Hero (1993). That’s pretty cool.

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
