Made in Abyss Volume 1 manga review…

This fantasy manga is set on an island that’s home to a gigantic pit known as the Abyss – the last unexplored place in the world. Cave raiders delve into its depths, fighting off fierce creatures as they search for rare relics. There’s also the mysterious curse of the Abyss to contend with; the further you descend into the cave system, the greater the illness and pain you will suffer on your return to the surface.

An apprentice ‘Red Whistle’ cave raider, young orphan Riko is the daughter of Lyza the Annihilator, a legendary raider who went missing in the pit a decade ago. While on a brief foray into the Abyss, Riko discovers a human-looking robot that she brings back to the surface, against her orphanage’s rules. To avoid detection, she gets him to pretend to be a boy named Reg. Soon after she meets her robotic new friend, Riko gets a message from her long-lost mum to meet her at the very bottom of the Abyss. Sneaking out of the orphanage, Riko and Reg set out on the long journey to find her – even if it means death.

Akihito Tsukushi’s artwork for Made in Abyss is very appealing, with lots of cute drawings of the kids as they explore their strange, subterranean world. However, the fluffy style is often at odds – sometimes shockingly so – with the events that take place, such as the children vomiting or Riko being strung up naked as a punishment. A cute but uncomfortable read, we’ll be interested to see where this abyssal adventure takes us next. Reviewed by Ian Wolf
