Our Weekly K-music Review posts are here to give our readers a helping hand and a quick look back to the notable releases from Korean artists in a weekly format. Today’s article looks at releases and comebacks from March 8-11 2018.

Heize – Jenga (Feat. GAEKO)
Released: March 8 2018

Known for her powerful vocals that blend well with any genre of music, Heize released her latest mini-album, Wind. Jenga, one of the songs from the album, features a retro jazzy concept with a modern twist, thanks to the Dynamic Duo’s Gaeko. The music video for the song Didn’t Know Me was also released at the same time, showing the diversity that Heize is celebrated for.

Jung IlHoon – She’s Gone
Released: March 8 2018

For many fans of Jung Ilhoon, his solo debut away from his K-pop boy group BTOB has been a long time coming. Finally released, solo album Big Wave is his first five-track album, including She’s Gone (which has an aesthetically pleasing music video). The song was composed and written by Ilhoon himself, but collaborators Vincenzo, Any Masingga and Fuxxy provided a helping hand.

Justhis & Paloalto – Switch
Released: March 8 2018

Taking Korean hip-hop to the next level, Paloalto is always breaking boundaries and working with some of the most respected Korean musicians in the industry, and this collaboration with Justhis is no exception. There is a nice mix of tone and vocals, with a smooth flow of lyrics and a music video that doesn’t take away from the song itself. In the future, we would love to see more from this duo, as they truly compliment each other’s skills.

Marmello – Wake Me Up
Released: March 8 2018

The K-pop scene is so used to having boy bands that when an all-female band comes along it’s a breath of fresh air. Keeping with the usual K-pop girl group sounds and style, their uniqueness comes with their musical instruments. Wake Me Up is a fun and light song with an interesting rock rift in the middle. Even though we feel that the song lacks a little something, it will be great to see what these girls can do as they grow into the next big female band.

Suzy – Midnight (With Yiruma)
Released: March 9 2018

As soon as we saw the name Yiruma we already knew that the music itself was going to be breathtaking – and we weren’t wrong. As part of her second mini-album Faces Of Love, singer/actress Suzy has created a heartbreaking yet beautiful collaboration with the world-renowned pianist. When placed together with an artistically created music video, the whole package is perfection – a truly stunning release by Suzy.

Suho x Jang Jane – Dinner
Released: March 10 2018

Suho’s presence among SM Entertainment’s male super group EXO is minimal but noticeable. With his collaboration with Jang Jane, there is a whole new persona to Suho, and we feel his talents as a solo artist are finally coming to the fore. The perfect harmony of both entertainers voices gives the song an ethereal feeling, and the simple filming style and aesthetics of the music video compliment that approach. It’s definitely nice to see the EXO member getting the spotlight and to see a different approach musically from him as well.

ACE – Little Star (Cover)
Released: March 9 2018

Originally a song by the K-indie group Standing Egg, VAV member Ace shares his heartfelt cover of the song Little Star. With controlled vocals and a soft backing track, he nails the emotions of the song, and once again shows the hidden talents within the K-pop world. Although this is not an official release, we felt that our readers would appreciate the beautifully conducted cover of the original song.

Heyne – Insomnia
Released: March 11 2018

Heyne’s unique childlike vocals separate her from the rest of the singers within the K-music industry. Her sound and pretty looks create a feeling of innocence within a mildly adult setting. The music video is dreamy but not confusing, focusing on Heyne more than telling a story – a bold move considering that most artists are known for being concept-dols (concept idols) for having music videos that express the lyrics or tell a detailed story. It feels as though the innocence of the vocals and the music video is made to contrast that of the lyrics.

Baek Ji Woong – Cheek
Released: March 11 2018

Mixing pop and jazz with smooth vocals, Baek Ji Woong expresses the emotions he feels when he is falling in love. Although we know that the singer has an extremely powerful vocal range, throughout the song it feels like he is controlling that power to show a more emotional side to himself. The music video tells the story that reflects the lyrics and is a beautiful happy-go-lucky hommage to people in love.

As there have been a lot of releases this week, be sure to check back for the second instalment of  K-music week in review, which will look at releases from 12 March – 14 March 2018.
