Anime fantasy film Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms is to get its first screening outside Japan at Glasgow Film Festival on Sunday 4 March.

Also known as Sayoasa for short and Let’s Decorate the Promised Flowers in the Morning of Farewells for extremely long, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms marks the directorial debut of prolific screenwriter Mari Okada, whose notable works include Black Butler, Anohana, The Anthem of the Heart and Gundam series Iron-Blooded Orphans.

Opening in Japan on 24 February and licensed for UK release by Anime Limited, the P.A.Works feature tells the story of young girl Maquia (Manaka Iwami), whose long-lived Iolf people do not age beyond their teens. When her peaceful town is attacked by invaders seeking the secret of their longevity, Maquia is forced to flee. Wandering the forest, she discovers an orphaned baby and decides to raise him …but as the boy grows older, Maquia’s looks remain the same.
