You may remember just two weeks ago we reported that a bidding war between Apple and HBO was set to unfold for a new sci-fi drama series to be written by JJ Abrams, the man who managed to ruin both Star Trek and Star Wars.
Details about the series are scarce at this point in time, but it will basically be a show about the world’s battle against an oppressive force. The Hollywood Reporter writes:
“[It’s about] a family – consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter – who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up transporting to another land amid a world’s battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world.”
It’s going to be the first TV show Abrams will have has created and written since Fringe. Cleary Mr Abrams and Bad Robot are keeping very busy, with the imminent release of Cloverfied 3 and his helming of Star Wars Episode IX.
The Merrian-Webster dictionary defines “Demimonde” as “a class of women on the fringes of respectable society supported by wealthy lovers” or “a distinct circle or world that is often an isolated part of a larger world”. From the description, Abrams is most likely going with that second meaning.
HBO has given us epics like Band of Brothers, The Pacific and Westworld, plus it’s forthcoming Fahrenheit 451 adaptation and the Watchmen pilot. Plus it will be looking to fill a Games of Thrones-shaped hole when the final season airs in 2019.
