Danny Boyle reportedly top choice to direct the next Bond movie

With its late 2019 release date looming ever closer, the latest James Bond film is still without a director. However, Variety reports that Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) is high on the list.

Last July, the 25th Bond film was given a release date of November 8, 2019. At that time, it wasn’t even certain if star Daniel Craig would return or who would be handling distribution in the US.

Back in October 2015 in the now infamous Time Out interview, he said that, having just finished making Spectre, “I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists” than do it again. Also that “all I want to do is move on,” “I just don’t want to think about it. I don’t know what the next step is,” and “if I did another Bond movie, it would only be for the money.”

At about the same time, while promoting Skyfall, Craig confirmed on the Graham Norton Show how badly injured he has been as a result of making the Bond movies, including having his right shoulder reconstructed, both knees operated on plus a sore thumb.

After Boyle directed the epic 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, he did a round of interviews claiming he’d never want to juggle the major budget of the Bond franchise and wouldn’t want to direct one. This came of course since Craig appeared as Bond in a wonderful segment where he was being briefed by the Queen herself.

However, it seems time can heal any wound as both have since…backpedaled somewhat over these heat-of-the-moment statements. Explaining those remarks a year later, Craig said “It was the day after filming [stopped on Spectre]. I’d been away from home for a year.”

Since then, Craig has been confirmed and Annapurna Pictures will distribute along with MGM, but…a director still remains elusive.

Around that same time, several directors were considered to be “frontrunners” for the film but, according to Variety, that changed once Annapurna came on board. Now all eyes are on Boyle, who is developing a film at the moment, but apparently has room in his schedule, which could be the deal breaker.

Boyle has given us nothing except high-quality, incredibly entertaining and enthralling movies, from Shallow Grave (1994) to Trainspotting (1996) to The Beach (2000) to 28 Days Later (2002).

Opinion is pretty much equally divided amongst fans about the choice of Boyle, but perhaps what they should be more worried about was…how Craig appeared at the BAFTAs a few days ago.

Observers took to Twitter to comment on how peculiar he looked.

Has he had a bad facelift? Gone the way of Lesley Ash? Bit too much botox..? Good grief, hopefully not. It just was not necessary, but there’s no denying…it does look like he has. We’ll find out soon enough.

At one point rumours were floating about with the possibly of Denis Villeneuve taking the helm of the next Bond movie. The director of Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and Sicario (2015) would certainly be another interesting choice, but according to Villeneuve, his adaptation of Dune comes first.
