Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios have announced the latest update for the free-to-play MMORPG Neverwinter. Based on the current Dungeons & Dragons storyline, it sees adventurers discover the lost city of Omu after lengthy exploration through the jungles of Chult.

But the words that caught our attention were “zombie-spewing T-Rex”, which is how lead designer Thomas Foss describes one of the Heroic Encounters in the update. According to Foss, this beastie makes the previous big bad – a T-Rex called the king of spines – look like a dwarf.

“Have you seen the size of the Tyrant?!” he told Dragon+, describing this unique creature. “If they thought the king of spines was a challenge, the Tyrant is twice as big, and twice as deadly. And it creates its own adds by spewing up zombies. The Tyrant is a major player in one of our Heroic Events, as well as the Apex creature for the new hunts.”

Foss says the update also offers plenty of additional challenges for players who have already completed the main Tomb of Annihilation storyline in the MMORPG, as they face a new Endgame Trial.

“The Cradle of the Death God serves as the finale for our Tomb of Annihilation storyline and is Neverwinter’s newest epic trial. In previous trials, adventurers have faced off against such legendary foes as Demogorgon, Prince of Demons, and Jarl Storvald, leader of the frost giant clan,” says Foss.

“Those who have run the D&D tabletop campaign may have an inkling of what challenges await anyone foolhardy enough to plumb the lowest levels of the tomb. Not only the archlich Acererak himself but also his creation – an atropal – an undead abomination that Acererak seeks to thrust into godhood with the power of souls collected by The Soulmonger.

“Epic trials put the coordination and teamwork of our most skilled adventuring parties to task and the Cradle of the Death God will be no exception! What we’re most excited about is the cinematic quality the team has been able to achieve with the Cradle, so look forward to battling through some fantastic environments as you make your way to the final showdown. Facing off against an archlich and a fledgling god will be a true test of skill, so prepare yourselves!”

The Lost City of Omu update in Neverwinter arrives for PC on 27 February 2018 and will be released later in the year for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
